Your IT team’s been through a lot of roles over the years, from isolated programmers to process and service managers. Now, to embrace the digital boom, IT will evolve again to accommodate the new digital business.
PGi joined CIOs and senior IT executives at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2014 this October to learn just how digital business is driving a new era of enterprise IT. The IT team will no longer focus on just operational excellence or developing new opportunities but instead will hone in on a hybrid of the two functions.
Gartner’s opening keynote presentation highlighted this emerging technology trend called bimodal IT. Part solid and part fluid, future IT departments will retain the predictability of the traditional IT role for operational excellence but will also leave room for flexibility that could enable agile development and responsiveness to change.
The CIO’s role will mold to this new IT culture, as well. The CIO of yesteryear managed costs by managing risks, but the new digital CIO will embrace risk.
All of these changing roles will put IT in a better position to focus on the user, who requires human-centered design and personal privacy. On this note, Gartner speakers also emphasized the need for digital humanism among IT leaders—keeping in mind “that business moments are human moments.”
One key component to a bimodal IT strategy is employing cloud-based conferencing and collaboration tools for IT professionals. These solutions let business users connect, collaborate and share ideas and information from their desktop, tablet or smartphone, enabling greater productivity in the office or on the go.
PGi showcased such tools at Gartner Symposium’s Content, Collaboration and Social Software Marketplace. PGi’s smart solutions prove that IT can have the features they need—like low bandwidth, security and interoperability—while offering the cloud-based, mobile, easy-to-use environment that users want.
