Last week the PGi Alpharetta and Atlanta teams worked together to volunteer for the 28th annual Hands on Atlanta Day, a major service initiative that organizes dozens of community projects throughout metro Atlanta focused on primary community needs including education and youth development, literacy, child hunger and parental engagement.
The city-wide initiative mobilized 3,000 volunteers to help support programs that gave over 13,000 kids a safe place to learn, served more than 500 seniors and provided more than 15,000 pounds of food and medical supplies to those in need.
The PGi team supported the day’s initiative by delivering meals to those who were homebound due to illness and disability through Open Hand Atlanta, a non-profit that helps people prevent or better manage chronic disease through Comprehensive Nutrition Care. The organization’s home-delivered meals and nutrition education help to reinforce the connection between informed food choices and improved quality of life.
“It was a great and humbling experience to be able to give back to those around us,” said Jana Reis, a PGi volunteer. “I’m grateful that I work for a company that is dedicated to the community and to helping others.”
“Metro Atlanta is the global headquarters of our organization,” said Sean O’Brien, PGi’s Chief Strategy Office and board member for Hands on Atlanta Day. “That’s why it’s so important that we support local non-profits like Open Hand – to help create a better community for all around us. We were proud to support Hands on Atlanta Day.”
In addition to giving back to the community around us, the PGi team had a wonderful time building relationships with those across the company that they may not get to work with daily. Corporate-sponsored community projects, such as this one, provide an opportunity for employees to not only give back but also get to know one another as well. A survey by Deloitte found that having a culture of volunteerism within an organization can boost team building, culture and the workplace environment, overall.
The PGi team had a wonderful experience and enjoyed getting involved with the community. We can’t wait for next year!
